Windows 10: Your Migration FAQ

The clock is officially ticking. You might have heard that in January 2020 Microsoft is ending support for Windows 7. That’s three years away. But… So what? Why is this important now? Making the move needs to be more than just about an operating system upgrade.

Why should I upgrade to Windows 10?
Protect your brand by securing the terminal. That’s the short answer. Here’s a long answer: Once Microsoft ends support for Windows 7 they won’t push out any further security patches. That means your network will be vulnerable to cyber-attacks, malware, and the like. You’ll also risk non-compliancy with PCI which could lead to fines, and worse, negative impacts to your end consumer’s trust.If you’ve never had a security issue while running Windows 7 or even Windows XP, you may be tempted to leave it in place rather than beginning the migration process. But running an unsupported operating system is incredibly risky. It’s like thinking, I never had a break-in at my house when I had a security system in place, so there’s no need to lock the door now, even though I quit using the security system!

Windows 10 offers enhanced security features that are designed to detect and prevent emerging cyber security threats from damaging your reputation and your relationship with your customers. Better still, the timing of Windows 10 presents the perfect opportunity to enable you to take advantage of more current software releases, new devices and overall combined solution features to enhance the customer experience with forward-looking interactions and transactions.

2020 is a long way away … I’ve got plenty of time, why start now?
Twenty-nine months might seem like a long time, but this goes way beyond simply “flipping a switch.” A successful implementation will include an evaluation of your network readiness and ability to support Windows 10, along with extensive testing, compliance vetting, systems and software considerations, and holistic management to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.Looking back to the last time the industry completed an operating system upgrade, it was clear that quite a few financial institutions waited too long to begin, resulting in a process that was far more rushed than it needed to be, thus adding to project risk and frustration.

ATMIA suggests that ATM operators will require 12-15 months internally to migrate – but your timeframe may be shorter or longer, depending on your current network status. The organization also encouraged FIs to begin implementation as long ago as 2015; “ATM deployers should start their 2020 migration without delay,” said ATMIA’s CEO, Mike Lee, in a position paper released that year.  Starting now gives you the time and flexibility to develop a plan, evaluate your network readiness and chart a path that is best for your business.
